The Nun Review

It took me some time to be able to sit down and watch this movie. And from the start I was immediately intrigued, not only because the movie was part of the "Conjuring" universe, but also because we already got a taste of the main villain in The Conjuring 2, Valak, a demon in the form of a nun.

One good thing I really liked was how all of these "standalone" stories intertwined with each other. And with every sequel we get just a little bit more of something spooky. This movie didn't exactly provide anything new when it came to paranormal, however, the story itself was interesting enough for me to want to see how it would end.

The timeline of the plot was centered around the 50's, and at first I was a little unclear on why the demon, Valak, haunted Lorraine in The Conjuring 2. But upon further review, and if I remember correctly, it had a lot to do with "The Nun" character, Maurice, who needed an exorcism provided by The Warrens. And since he'd been possessed by Valak, the demon latched onto Lorraine that way. That particular exorcism had a profound effect on Lorraine for the reasons revealed in The Conjuring 2.

But moving on with The Nun, there were only a couple of things that made the movie worth a watch: the seclusion which contributed to the stakes and conflict of the movie, and the fact that all this demon shit was going on in a cloistered abbey. There were reviews that criticized the movie for "being too reliant on jump scares", but as an advocate of jump scares, I totally disagree that that was one of the problems with the movie. It instead just didn't provide anything different except for the story's setting.
